Utrecht is the busiest transport hub in the Netherlands, with Utrecht Central Station, the Beatrix Theatre and various access routes into the city centre at its heart. A new car park under Jaarbeursplein also opened its doors here recently. Bolidt installed 25,000m2 of Boligrip® flooring systems, its durable systems developed for parking facilities, in this ultra-modern, three-level underground car park. Not wanting to have to worry about maintenance, the city signed a 15-year maintenance contract with Bolidt.
The design of the Jaarbeursplein car park is by Zwarts & Jansma Architects in Amsterdam, which won the tender for the complete design of Jaarbeursplein together with engineering firm Witteveen+Bos and OKRA Landscape Architects. Commissioned by Zwarts & Jansma and the City of Utrecht, Bolidt was asked for input on the flooring systems. These had to be durable and safe, of course, but the aesthetic possibilities were equally important. With red and yellow being the municipal colours of the city, it was the clients’ wish that these colours should feature in the floor design.
The close to 800 parking spaces in the Jaarbeursplein car park were urgently needed for the proper functioning of the renewed city centre. In order to ensure that users of the car park feel as comfortable as possible, a great deal of thought has gone into helping visitors find their bearings. With bright, uniform lighting and floor markings in the municipal colours, both cars and exit are easy to find. Prior to the actual application, Bolidt created a number of sample surfaces for the clients to make a final choice of colours.
This project was not the first time the City of Utrecht, VolkerWessels and Bolidt worked together. The city had previously had good experiences with projects such as Vredenburg car park. In total, Bolidt installed about 150,000m2 of flooring systems in the area in recent years, covering floors in car parks, underground bike parks, the Entrance Building of Hoog Catharijne shopping centre (35 million visitors a year) and the Catharijneknoop complex.
The Utrecht authorities will not have to worry about the maintenance of the car park flooring for the foreseeable future, having signed a 15-year maintenance contract with Bolidt for this. Bolidt tests the flooring systems annually to examine whether they still meet the specified requirements. This is how it can be guaranteed that the flooring systems are always in an excellent and safe condition. It is a solution that is growing in popularity, with the Westluidense Poort and Acta car parks, in Tiel and Amsterdam respectively, also having recently signed a similar contract with Bolidt.
Since it was established, Bolidt has been replacing traditional materials in order to make a contribution to a better living and natural environment in the areas of safety, durability, energy & data, design and hygiene. In the case of car parks, Bolidt finishes the concrete with a synthetic coating to prolong its durability. Bolidt’s flooring systems make an important contribution to improving the quality and life span of parking facilities. The Boligrip® systems protect the concrete underneath and their slip resistance increases safety.
