Bolidt flooring under close medical supervision in transforming Erasmus MC

The renowned Erasmus Medical Centre is literally building a brand-new, modern future by creating an impressive new hospital environment. It is making a drastic change in course, using the latest technology, insights and materials. Not surprisingly, the educational centre of the Erasmus MC was upgraded accordingly. The Erasmus MC itself says about this that the educational building, built in 1966, ‘did no longer meet the standards required for current student numbers and contemporary forms of education’.

Claus and Kaan Architects took on the design role. The vision was clear: a new educational centre, which would bring all of the EMC’s activities together. What was lacking was an interactive meeting place. The resulting challenge was just as clear as the vision: to create an inspiring ‘learning environment’. A central space where students feel at home and can enter into conversations, discussions and consultations with fellow students, professors and researchers in passing. Forming a creative, interactive part of both their education and development. The result is the so-called ‘education square’, located in the previously open Querido courtyard. The state-of-the-art acilities form a ‘landscape of learning’ laid out around this square. Desk space for hundreds of students and lecturers, a medical library featuring uniquely designed book shelving, computer facilities, an espresso bar, a restaurant and forty lecture and colloquium rooms.

Almost 6,000 m² of Bolidtop^® has been installed in the educational centre’s lecture rooms and corridors. The Bolidtop^® 525 and its more specialized cousin, the Bolidtop^® 525 Combi, lie at everybody’s feet. The Combi flooring system excels in contact noise reduction, an essential property in some spaces. The Bolidtop^® 525 has the versatility of a chameleon: its visual appearance can be custom adjusted to the specific wishes of the architect, whenever and wherever. In the past, Bolidt installed suitable systems on several stairways and footbridges in the hospital. Not only is Bolidt able and willing to do much more, it actually will - 70,000 m² more, to be precise. Bolidt will proudly put in another three years of effort to complete installing 50,000 m² of Plycoat and 20,000 m² of Bolidtop^® in the Erasmus MC.

Plycoat is designed to achieve maximum hygiene, largely through seamless floor-to-wall transitions. The transitions from one flooring project to the next at the Erasmus MC have been similarly seamless. Bolidt does not mind the regular visits to hospital. It is all for the best.
