Elon Musk recently revealed his vision for an all-in-one solar storage system. The vision includes camouflaged roof tiles and the Powerwall 2.
Released last year, Musk described the Powerwall as the ‘missing link’ to a sustainable future. It works as a battery that powers your home from renewable sources, such as wind or solar. The Powerwall 2 stores twice as much energy as its predecessor, with enough power provide for a four bedroom house.
The Powerwall 2 was presented alongside Solar Roof, an innovation in rooftop solar harvesting. Whilst the function of Solar Roof is very much the same as conventional panelling, it is the appearance that is dissimilar. Rather than placing heavy layers of solar panelling on the rooftop, Solar Roof is made of glass cells that resemble roof tiles.
Whilst being green and living a sustainable life style is becoming more and more trendy, appearance will always matter to some. This is exactly what Musk realises in his work. Just as Tesla has made electric cars desirable, so too will they make solar panelling desirable. The aim is to make solar roofing look better than standard roofing. This way going green will not only be the right thing to do, but also the desirable thing to do.
The cells are incredibly resilient as well as having a ‘quasi-infinite lifetime’ due to their quartz construction. Their appeal is heightened by the choice of four different styles; Textured Glass, Slate Glass, Tuscan Glass or Smooth Glass.
Through the combination of Solar Roof and Powerwall 2, 100 per cent of a home’s energy can be provided through renewable sources.
These products were jointly unveiled by Tesla and Solar City following the announcement of their future merging.
